Alumina catalysts are very efficient at converting H2S/SO2 to sulphur, but not capable of achieving the high level of conversion of carbon sulphide compounds that is required for high overall sulphur recovery.

Titania catalysts can do this well, but they are expensive, and the extrudates are more fragile than spheres.

Alcoa has now taken the development of Claus catalysts one step further by combining the best features of both types of catalyst into a revolutionary new product called DD-931.
