A recent NACE corrosion study found that corrosion is the second leading cause of pipeline failure.
It costs businesses about US$7 billion a year on the transmission side of the industry and US$5 billion a year on the distribution side.
It is also a growing issue: as the pipeline infrastructure continues to age, corrosion is going to be one of the strongest limiting forces on its lifespan.
