Reducing logging time

Calvin Wilson, President and CEO of Caspian Well Services explains how to utilise cost and time while maintaining safe logging operations.

Caspian Well Services Ltd (CWS) is a small company that provides a wide variety of services in a cost effective manner with the primary clients being operators working in marginal fields. CWS prefers to work closely with the clients to help identify methods to reduce operational costs and/or increase production, then locate the necessary products or services and bring them into the operating area in a cost effective manner. The educational background and experience of key management personnel enable CWS to quickly integrate components from different vendors into a single system with safe operations, optimal cost and minimal time.

CWS has been working in Azerbaijan since 2000 and began by perforating older wells with deep penetrating through tubing charges provided by Owen Oil Tools, added Open Hole Logging in 2001, Pulsed Neutron-Neutron (Hotwell) in 2003, Drilling Data Logging (Mud Logging) in 2004 and Inertial Gyro (SEG) in 2007.  Services are currently provided both onshore and offshore in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan and Ukraine.   

The Pulsed Neutron-Neutron (PNN) has been utilised extensively as a tool to evaluate the current hydrocarbon saturations in older cased wells and to monitor a water flood project in Azerbaijan. The PNN has proven to be a good tool for use in these regions where the formation water salinities range from 5000 to 20,000 ppm chlorides.

CWS is now operating in Ukraine for Regal Petroleum to assist in their field development project where they have contracted two 2000 HP rigs newly manufactured in the USA. Drilling Data Logging, Open Hole Logging, Cased Hole Logging, Perforating and Well Testing Services are being provided through co-operation between Ukrgeofizika and CWS in this project. The primary goal of this project is to drill and complete these wells in a much shorter timeframe than previously achieved in this region which will significantly increase the amount of natural gas and condensate available inside Ukraine.

This is an important project where higher cost services are being utilised to reduce the time required to drill and complete the wells to improve the long-term economics of the project. In this project, the daily rates for the drilling rigs are higher than the rigs used previously, so the services provided during drilling operations must be provided in the shortest time possible. For this reason, CWS is being used to utilise Open Hole Logging Tools that can be run in combination to reduce the logging time by a very significant amount when compared to making individual logging runs at depths of 6000 meters. The costs for the logging equipment is higher than the equipment utilised previously, but the overall cost to the operating company is considerably less when the rig time required for the operations is included with the cost of the logging operation.

LLC Caspian Well Services Ukraine is a Ukrainian registered company working in co-operation with Poltava Geophysical Survey Expedition of National Geophysical Company (NGC) “Ukrgeofizika” to provide these services for Regal Petroleum.
