Russia and the energy-rich states of the Caspian Basin
(Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) are
poised to challenge for global energy dominance. Crude output in
excess of domestic demand and ambitious oil industry plans to
increase exports meant the region overtook Saudi Arabia to
become the world’s largest oil producer in August 2006.
Add gas fields stretching from Western to Eastern Siberia and
across Central Asia – and a neighbouring market, Eastern Europe,
which is prioritising oil and gas issues – and the potential is enormous!
Securing reliable, high-growth 21st century markets for their oil,
pipeline gas and LNG is a top priority for Russia and the Caspian.
But success in international gas markets will not come easily. It can only
be assured through major increases in current production and significant
international as well as domestic investments in infrastructure.
For both economic and political reasons, improving production
and securing reliable supplies are a top priority for Eastern Europe
– led by the Ukraine and other former Soviet republics.
These upcoming projects are attracting noticeable investments
from the major Russian energy companies.
As its energy sectors continue to grow, the CIS is starting to
consolidate its position as the most promising market in the world.
